The Association (Charity Number 518901) was founded in 1986 by Mrs Olwen Edwards who, disturbed by the ever-increasing number of unwanted pets, began taking them into her own home. The animals received the best of care and most were subsequently re-homed. However, the problem was ongoing and very costly, with many animals requiring expensive veterinary treatment. During 1986/1987 Olwen appealed for help through the local newspapers and was joined by a number of other people. They formed a committee and this dedicated group named themselves the Abandoned Animals Association. Subsequently they applied for and achieved registered charity status.
